Nathaniel was discharged from the 87th Indiana Infantry about 21 months early, and on the very day that the "Cracker Line" was established at Chattanooga.
It seems possible that he may have been among those soldiers at Chattanooga whose physical condition was depleted by starvation, and, being a musician was considered non-essential, so was sent home. This is of course entirely conjectural, but coupled with the fact that he died only a year later may indicate an impoverished physical condition. I can find no sources stating otherwise. -PH.
