     Emma C. Sutcliff was born in December, 1847 at Fayette County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Joseph M. Sutcliffe and Cynthia Ann Robinson. Emma C. Sutcliff married, at age 29, Isaac J. Doddridge, age 30 on Saturday, June 16, 1877 at Fayette County, Indiana, . Emma C. Sutcliff died on April 19, 1926 at Waterloo Twp., Fayette County, Indiana, at age 78.¹ She was buried on April 21, 1926 at Robinson Chapel Cemetery, Fayette County, Indiana.¹

     Susannah Sutcliff is the daughter of John Sutcliffe and Mary Lomax.

     Eliza Sutcliffe was born in 1810 at England. She was the daughter of John Sutcliffe and Mary Lomax. Eliza Sutcliffe married James Robinson on Thursday, October 1, 1835 at Fayette County, Indiana, .^1,2 Eliza Sutcliffe died between 1850 and 1860 at Indiana.

     Elizabeth Ann Sutcliffe was born in 1825 at Carlisle, Sullivan County, Indiana. She was the daughter of John Sutcliffe and Mary Lomax. Elizabeth Ann Sutcliffe married Alonzo Flagg Estabrook on Sunday, October 13, 1844 at Fayette County, Indiana, .¹ Elizabeth Ann Sutcliffe died before 1880 at Hamilton, Sullivan County, Indiana.²

     James Sutcliffe married Betty Smith . James Sutcliffe was born in 1754 at Bolton, Lancashire, England.

     John Sutcliffe was born about 1783 at England.¹ He was the son of James Sutcliffe and Betty Smith. John Sutcliffe worked after 1800 as a reedmaker at England.¹ In weaving, a reed is a comb-like device for 'beating' the weft thread into place as it is passed by the shuttle, the warp threads passing between the teeth of the reed.² He married Mary Lomax, daughter of John Lomax and Magdalena Stelly, on Sunday, January 10, 1802 . John Sutcliffe worked after 1803 as as a Methodist Minister.¹ He immigrated in 1812 to America; as a stowaway from England.¹ He died in 1843 at Fayette County, Indiana.¹


It was in 1828 that the Sutcliffe family came into the then "wilds" of Fayette county and founded a home in Waterloo township, a home which is still in the possession of the family. The founder of this branch of the Sutclifife family in Indiana was a Methodist clergyman, the Rev. John Sutcliffe, who, strangely enough, left his native England as a "stowaway" upon his departure for America. That was in 1812. Upon his arrival in this country he located in Kentucky, but in 1828 left that state with his family and came to Indiana, locating in Fayette county, where he spent the remainder of his life, one of the most substantial and influential pioneer residents of the northeastern part of the county.

The Rev. John Sutcliffe was born in England, where he received an excellent education and where he became a minister of the Methodist church. He was trained as a reedmaker, a member of the guild which had in charge the making of the reeds for the old looms of that period, and members of which guild, in order to protect the weaving industry, were forbidden by the British government from leaving that country. John Sutcliffe, however, determined to get out of the country and to go to the United States, where he was sure better opportunities awaited craftsmen. He had a friend who was the captain of a vessel sailing to America and to this captain he confided his design. The captain told him if he could stow himself away on board so securely as to evade the government inspection of the vessel before sailing, after the point of final inspection had been passed all would be well, that he then should have the unmolested privileges of the vessel. In order to get on board the vessel John Sutcliffe insinuated himself into the gang of stevedores who were loading the vessel and presently was thus able to stow himself away securely in the hold, where he remained until after final inspection of the vessel had been made, when he revealed himself to the captain and the balance of the voyage was made in comfort. He had taken the precaution to pack his reed-making; tools, upon the exportation of which the government also had an interdiction, in a firkin of butter, which he had openly shipped aboard the vessel on which he stowed himself away, and thus safely smuggled his valued tools out of the country for use in the new home he thought to set up in the New World. Upon his arrival in this country he proceeded to Kentucky and located in Fayette county, in the neighborhood of Lexington. There he presently was joined by his wife, Mary, to whom, upon his arrival here, he had at once imparted the news of his safe arrival, and the new home was set up in Kentucky, where he began working at his trade and where he also soon gained more than a local reputation as a minister of the Methodist church. In 1828 the Rev. John Sutcliffe and family left Kentucky and came to Indiana, settling in Waterloo township, this county, where he and his wife spent their last days, his death occurring in 1843, he then being about sixty years of age. His wife had preceded him to the grave some years previously. They were the parents of ten children, of whom Joseph M. Sutcliffe was the youngest son and the ninth in order of birth.

Joseph M. Sutcliffe was born in Fayette county, Kentucky, in 1821, and was about seven years of age when he came to this county with his parents, the family settling in Waterloo township, where he spent the rest of his life, becoming one of the most influential residents of that part of the county. He received an excellent education for that period and ever took an active part in public aft'airs, serving for years as a member of the board of county commissioners. After his marriage in 1842 he established his home in Waterloo township and became a well-to-do farmer. For more than forty years he was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church and he and his wife were ever active in local good works. On his home farm in Waterloo township, Joseph M. Sutclifife died in 1882. His widow survived him for about nine years, her death occurring in 1891. She was born, Cynthia Ann Robinson, in Fayette county, daughter of Matthew and Eleanor Robinson, the former of whom was born in Morgantown, Virginia, in 1781, and who, in 1841, came with his family to Indiana and settled in Waterloo township, this county, where he spent the rest of his life. He was one of the founders of Robinson Chapel Methodist Episcopal church. His death occurred not long after he came to this county and his widow survived him until 1864, she being eighty-four years of age at the time of her death. Mrs. Sutcliffe was a woman of refinement and was a zealous worker in the Methodist Episcopal church.


To Joseph M. and Cynthia Ann (Robinson) Sutcliffe four children were born, two of whom died in infancy, the survivors being Dr. John A. Sutcliffe, a surgeon, of Indianapolis, and Emma, who is still living on the old home place in Waterloo township, widow of Isaac J. Doddridge. It was in June, 1877, that Emma Sutcliffe was united in marriage to Isaac J. Doddridge, who was born in the neighboring county of Wayne, where he grew to manhood. After his marriage he located in Waterloo township, on the place where Mrs. Doddridge lives now. He was a life-long farmer and became the owner of a farm of eighty acres. His death occurred in 1909 and since then Mrs. Doddridge has continued to make her home on the farm where she now lives and where she has lived since she was four years of age. She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, as was her husband.¹

     Dr. John A. Sutcliffe was born in May, 1845 at Fayette County, Indiana.¹ He was the son of Joseph M. Sutcliffe and Cynthia Ann Robinson. Dr. John A. Sutcliffe married, at age 31, Leora K. Jones, age 19, daughter of H. L. Jones and Katherine Stevens, on Tuesday, July 18, 1876 at Fayette County, Indiana, .² Dr. John A. Sutcliffe worked in 1880 as a Physician.³ He lived between 1880 and 1920 at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. He worked in 1900 as a Surgeon at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. He died on May 18, 1931 at New Highland Sanitarium, Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana.^4,5 He was buried on May 20, 1931 at Springersville, Fayette County, Indiana.^5,4

     John S. Sutcliffe was born on August 9, 1818 at Kentucky; (see note below.)^1,2 He was the son of John Sutcliffe and Mary Lomax. John S. Sutcliffe married, at age 26, Mary Jane Robinson, age 16 on Wednesday, December 25, 1844 at Fayette County, Indiana, .³ John S. Sutcliffe died on January 21, 1905 at Monroe, Iowa, at age 86.^4,2

Niece Emma C, Sutcliffe (b, 1847) was staying with them at the time the 1900 census was taken in Monroe Twp., Iowa. As she lists her marital status as "widow" and gives her birth date as May 1847 (instead of December 1847, and lists her Surname as "Sutcliffe" instead of "Doddridge", she appears to be an as-yet unknown cousin. -ph.⁵

There is also some conflicting information about John Sutcliffe's birth year. His headstone and the 1880 and 1900 Federal census indicate he was born in August, 1817. However The Coan Family Bible gives his sister Julia Anne Sutcliffe's birth year as March, 1817, and her tombstone also states that year. There is a possiblility that John S. Sutcliffe was a cousin raised by Julia Anne's parents, or that one or the other birth dates is simply wrong. If indeed they are siblings then I personally give more weight to the Coan family Bible listing, which I've seen myself and have a transcribed copy.

     Joseph M. Sutcliffe was born in 1821 at Fayette County, Kentucky.¹ He was the son of John Sutcliffe and Mary Lomax. Joseph M. Sutcliffe married Cynthia Ann Robinson, daughter of Matthew Robinson and Eleanor Haymond, on Thursday, November 10, 1842 at Fayette County, Indiana, . Joseph M. Sutcliffe died in 1882 at Waterloo Twp, Fayette County, Indiana.²

The 1880 census for Waterloo Twp, Fayette Co., Indiana says that both of Joseph's parents were from England. Both of Cynthia's parents were from Virginia.

     Julia Anne Sutcliffe was born on March 11, 1817 at Providence, Rhode Island. She was the daughter of John Sutcliffe and Mary Lomax. Julia Anne Sutcliffe married, at age 25, John Denman Coan, age 22 on Thursday, March 17, 1842 at Fayette County, Indiana, .¹ Julia Anne Sutcliffe appeared on the census of 1850 at Fayette County, Indiana.² She married, at age 33, John Daubenspeck, age 57, son of Phillip Daubenspeck and Barbara Smelser, on Monday, February 10, 1851 at Fayette County, Indiana, .³ Julia Anne Sutcliffe appeared on the census of 1860 at Miami County, Indiana.⁴ She died on October 14, 1872 at Miami County, Indiana, at age 55.

     M. Elizabeth Sutcliffe was born in September, 1843 at Fayette County, Indiana.¹ She was the daughter of Joseph M. Sutcliffe and Cynthia Ann Robinson.¹ M. Elizabeth Sutcliffe died on August 10, 1844 at Fayette County, Indiana.¹

     Mariah E. Sutcliffe was born about 1811 at England. She was the daughter of John Sutcliffe and Mary Lomax. Mariah E. Sutcliffe married William Henry Thomas on Sunday, October 8, 1837 at Fayette County, Indiana, .^1,2

     Mary Mellender Sutcliffe was born on September 19, 1859 at Fayette County, Indiana.¹ She was the daughter of Joseph M. Sutcliffe and Cynthia Ann Robinson.¹ Mary Mellender Sutcliffe died on December 30, 1860 at Fayette County, Indiana, at age 1.¹

     Emma V. Swimley was born on April 2, 1841 at Pennsylvania.¹ She married, at age 20, Jeremiah L. Ramsey, age 29, son of Samuel Ramsey and Elizabeth Hahn, on Thursday, March 20, 1862 at Miami County, Indiana, . Emma V. Swimley died on July 27, 1905 at Miami County, Indiana, at age 64.¹ She was buried after July 27, 1905 at Santa Fe Cemetery, Miami County, Indiana.¹

     Matilda Tait was born about 1880. She married John Elmer Anderson about 1906 . Matilda Tait died after 1930.

     Margaret Elvira Tarkington married David Harrison Black . Margaret Elvira Tarkington was born on August 23, 1857 at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. She died on February 17, 1923 at Poplar Bluff, Butler County, Missouri, at age 65. She was buried about February 19, 1923 at Qulin Cementery, Butler County, Missouri.

     Sarah E. Tatlock was born in 1871 at Indiana. She married Solomon Herbert Waisner, age 23, son of Solomon Waisner and Mary Sally Elvira Bowman, on Thursday, April 28, 1887 .

     Ada Ruth Taylor was born on July 12, 1921 at Kansas.^1,2 She was the daughter of Earl Taylor and Edna J. Pinson. Ada Ruth Taylor married Jess Kenneth Kellerman, son of Joseph N. Kellerman and Ida Gilgenberg, before 1951 . Ada Ruth Taylor died on August 2, 1996 at Mesa, Maricopa County, Arizona, at age 75.²

     Earl Taylor was born on June 25, 1893 at Missouri.^2,3 He was the son of Newton Seigel Taylor and Debbie Agnes Beckley.¹ Earl Taylor married, at age 23, Edna J. Pinson, age 21, daughter of James Milton Pinson and Susan V. Yeary, on Wednesday, July 26, 1916 at St. James County, Missouri, . Earl Taylor died on June 21, 1972 at Ocean Beach, San Diego County, California, at age 78.⁴

     Isaac Newton Taylor was born on November 7, 1839 at Illinois. He died on March 20, 1911 at Livingston County, Missouri, at age 71.

     Newton Seigel Taylor was born on March 6, 1865 at Mount Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois.¹ He was the son of Isaac Newton Taylor. Newton Seigel Taylor married, at age 26, Debbie Agnes Beckley, age 16, daughter of Adam Beckley and Sarah Jane Grim, on Thursday, October 1, 1891 at Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri, .^2,1 Newton Seigel Taylor died on November 22, 1932 at West Plains, Howell County, Missouri, at age 67.

     Sarah Tewksbury was born about 1671/72 at St. James Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. She was the daughter of William Tewksbury. Sarah Tewksbury married Charles Hyatt, son of Charles Hyatt Sr. and Mary Preston, about 1692/93 .

     William Tewksbury was christened. He was born about 1649/50 at Mavorn Hills, Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

     Denia Thayer was born about 1842 at Shelby County, Indiana. She married William Merritt Thrasher, age 29, son of Woodson Walker Thrasher and Barbara Daubenspeck, on Tuesday, December 30, 1862 at Shelby County, Indiana, .

     Cynthia Anne Thomas was born in 1850 at Waterloo Township, Fayette County, Indiana. She was the daughter of William Henry Thomas and Mariah E. Sutcliffe.

     Francis Marion Thomas was born in December, 1842 at Waterloo Township, Fayette County, Indiana.¹ He was the son of William Henry Thomas and Mariah E. Sutcliffe. Francis Marion Thomas married Harriette A. Crumpet about 1863 .¹ Francis Marion Thomas worked in 1870 as a retail grocer at Des Moines, Iowa.² He worked in 1880 as a farmer.³ He worked in 1900 as a stock dealer.¹ He died in 1912.

     Frederick Sutcliffe Thomas was born on May 8, 1840 at Waterloo Township, Fayette County, Indiana. He was the son of William Henry Thomas and Mariah E. Sutcliffe. Frederick Sutcliffe Thomas died on June 21, 1924 at Monroe County, Iowa, at age 84.

     John R. Thomas was born about 1833 at Indiana. He was the son of William Henry Thomas and Mariah E. Sutcliffe.
