     Susan Hartleroad was born in 1821 at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Lawrence Herchelroth and Elizabeth B. Kline.

     Susanna Hartleroad was born on July 13, 1886 at Miami County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Hartleroad and Anna Frick. Susanna Hartleroad died on May 2, 1965 at age 78.

     Verdie Hartleroad was born in 1897. She was the daughter of Senis Hartleroad and Anna E. Weisenberger.

     Vern Hartleroad was born on June 20, 1885 at Miami County, Indiana. He was the son of Senis Hartleroad and Anna E. Weisenberger. Vern Hartleroad married, at age 32, Gladys Carrie Zimmerman on Saturday, September 8, 1917 at Miami County, Indiana, .¹ Vern Hartleroad married, at age 33, Louie M. Johnson on Monday, August 26, 1918 at Miami County, Indiana, .¹ Vern Hartleroad died on July 19, 1955 at age 70.

     Violet Shirley May Hartleroad was born about 1905 at Miami County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Hartleroad and Anna Frick. Violet Shirley May Hartleroad married Lloyd Bunnell about 1922 . Violet Shirley May Hartleroad and Lloyd Bunnell were divorced before 1930.¹

     Walda Hartleroad was born in 1905 at Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. He was the son of Andrew J. Hartleroad and Bertha Crim.

     Wayne E. Hartleroad was born on June 25, 1922 at Miami County, Indiana. He was the son of Earl George Hartleroad and Erdia O. Billheimer. Wayne E. Hartleroad died on November 19, 2005 at Logansport, Cass County, Indiana, at age 83.

Wayne E. Hartleroad, 83, Logansport, went to be with the Lord at 9:25 a.m. on Saturday, November 19,
2005 at Miller's Merry Manor, Logansport.
He was born on June 25, 1922 in Miami County to Earl and Erdia (Billheimer) Hartleroad, and married
Marjorie Ellen Medborn on January 19, 1946 in Cass County.
Hartleroad was the former owner and operator of the local Filter Queen Sweeper and Sales Service.
He was an honorary deacon and member of the Blue Ball Christian Church, and had worked with and
retired from the Canteen Corporation in 1984.
The 1941 graduate of Peru High School served in the United States Navy during World War II on the
U.S.S. Nassau in the Pacific.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Ellen K. Hartleroad, Logansport, and Patricia Cain and
husband Doug, Logansport; sister, Doris Ellen Hierholzer and husband John, Peru; step-brother, Paul
Kesling and wife Anita, Florida; two grandchildren, Eric Cain and wife Anita, Logansport, and Rebecca
Maurer and husband Chris, Greenfield; two great-grandchildren, Caleb Cain and Shaylen Cain; several
nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

     Wilhelmina Hartleroad was born on April 22, 1884 at Miami County, Indiana. She was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin Hartleroad and Anna Frick. Wilhelmina Hartleroad died on December 17, 1884 at Miami County, Indiana.

     William Hartleroad was born in 1848. He was the son of John Hartlerode and Mahala White.

     William H. Hartleroad was born about 1855.² He was the son of David Hartleroad and Laura J. York.²

     Adam Hartlerode was born on August 2, 1872. He was the son of Lawrence Hartlerode and Sarah Poor. Adam Hartlerode died in 1907.

     Albert Charles Hartlerode was born in August, 1875. He was the son of Lawrence Hartlerode and Sarah Poor. Albert Charles Hartlerode married Alta Parker, age 15 on Saturday, August 15, 1896 at Lake County, Indiana, .

     Evaline Hartlerode was born in February, 1900 at Indiana. She was the daughter of Albert Charles Hartlerode and Alta Parker.

     Evelyn Hartlerode was born on November 27, 1870. She was the daughter of Lawrence Hartlerode and Sarah Poor.

     Gerald Roland Hartlerode was born on March 11, 1898 at Indiana. He was the son of Albert Charles Hartlerode and Alta Parker. Gerald Roland Hartlerode worked in 1918 as a machinist at the Studebaker Motor Company at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.

     Irving Hartlerode was born on October 23, 1891 at Hammond, Lake County, Indiana. He was the son of Lawrence Hartlerode and Vera Jennie Frazier. Irving Hartlerode died on August 16, 1953 at Chicago, Illinois, at age 61.

     John Hartlerode was born on July 26, 1823 at Portage County, Ohio. He was the son of Lawrence Hartleroad and Susannah Maud Woonshower. John Hartlerode married, at age 24, Mahala White on Sunday, February 27, 1848 at Miami County, Indiana, . John Hartlerode began military service between 1861 and 1863 as a Private in Company "B" of the 40th Indiana Volunteers. He married Nancy Jane Riley in 1863 . John Hartlerode died on June 23, 1899 at age 75.

     Lawrence Hartlerode was born on August 2, 1842 at Kent, Ohio.^1,2,3 He was the son of Lawrence Hartleroad and Susannah Maud Woonshower. Lawrence Hartlerode began military service between 1861 and 1865 after Enlisting at Pulaskiville, Indiana in Company "H" of the 46th Indiana Infantry. His rank was listed as Corporal. He escaped from a POW camp in Texas (see note below.)⁴ He was Captured at the battle of Sabine Crossroads. Escaped from Camp Gross, TX. on April 8, 1864.⁴ He died on December 29, 1935 at Hammond, Lake County, Indiana, at age 93.⁵

I left Camp Gross the 4th day of Sept. climbing over the stockade. We struck south east coming by way of swamps and through the woods. Four of us started in the first place. Two were taken sick and compelled to give it up - the other left me while I was sleeping. I came into the lines at [uncertain - might be Bertrandville]. I think there were about three thousand men at Tyler. About or nearly two months ago about 500 of us were sent to Camp Gross. Prisoners escape every few days - the guards conniving at or not caring to prevent it. I think at least 20 men got out in the ten days preceding my escape. Lt. Col Flory of the 46th Ind is the officer of highest rank at Camp Gross. The Major of the 43d Ind is acting as surgeon at Tyler.

The enemy are making a large Boat for some purpose at Lake Charles. There are some two small schooners there. The Boat they are building is large and looks as if it might be intended for a gunboat.

I believe that there are fwd troops south of Alexandria. I met troops about 600 going up the [Bayou] Teche. They told me they were falling back that the Yanks were coming and that they would get to Franklin before I would.⁴

     Lydia Hartlerode was born on January 28, 1821 at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.¹ She was the daughter of Lawrence Herchelroth and Elizabeth B. Kline. Lydia Hartlerode married, at age 24, Samuel J. Herriff, age 26 on Thursday, June 5, 1845 at Portage County, Ohio, . Lydia Hartlerode died on January 19, 1906 at Rootstown Township, Portage County, Ohio, at age 84. She was buried after January 19, 1906 at Homeland Cemetery, Portage County, Ohio.

     Maude Hartlerode was born in 1884. She was the daughter of Lawrence Hartlerode and Vera Jennie Frazier. Maude Hartlerode married Harry G. Eads on Thursday, June 5, 1902 .¹ Maude Hartlerode died on December 28, 1964 at South Holland, Indiana,

Mrs. Maude Eads, 80, 7437 Van Buren St., Hammond, died Monday at the Colonial Convalescent Home, South Holland.

A resident of Hammond for 73 years, she was a member of the First Christian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 370.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Friends may call at the Virgil Huber Funeral Home, 7051 Kennedy Ave., Hammond, Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 10 p.m.

Survivors include two sons Irving, Hammond, and Harrison, Wickliff, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Virginia Linsey and Mrs. Maurine Hodge, both of Hammond; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.


Her obituary was published in The Hammond Times on December 30, 1964.


Services for Mrs. Maude Eads will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Virgil Huber Funeral Home, 7051 Kennedy Ave., Hammond.

The Rev. Frank Buechley of the First Christian Church of Hammond will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Hammond.

Hammond Chapter 370, Order of the Eastern Star, will conduct memorial services at 7:30 p.m. today in the chapel.

Mrs. Eads, 80, of 7437 Van Buren Ave., Hammond, died Monday.

She was a member of the Hammond Chapter, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Tent 41.²

     Warren Henry Hartlerode was born on October 2, 1876. He was the son of Lawrence Hartlerode and Sarah Poor.

     Mary Harvey was born on March 23, 1852 at Stokes County, North Carolina.^4,3 She was the daughter of John Harvey.³ Mary Harvey married, at age 31, James M. Beatt, age 28, son of Joseph Beatt and Emma J. (surname unknown), on Sunday, May 13, 1883 at De Soto, Jefferson County, Missouri, .^1,5 Mary Harvey died on January 3, 1928 at Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, Illinois, at age 75

The Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths Index has her Date of Death as January 3, 1927, but the headstone in Opdyke Cemetery clearly reads 1928.^2,3

She was buried after January 3, 1928 at Opdyke Cemetery, Opdyke, Jefferson County, Illinois.²

     Agnes Hathornthwaite was born about 1648/49 at England. She married Thomas Croasdale, son of Henry Croasdale and Janet Harrison, about 1667 . Agnes Hathornthwaite was a Quaker.¹ She immigrated on October 22, 1682 to America. She died on August 28, 1684 at Bucks County, Pennsylvania.²

     Adeline Lucille Hawley was born on January 21, 1919 at Sylvania, Lucas County, Ohio. She married, at age 18, Robert Edward Vogler, age 19, son of Frederick Jacob Vogler and Marie Emma LeBuda, on Saturday, May 29, 1937 . Adeline Lucille Hawley died on September 1, 1999 at Pomona, California, at age 80. She was buried on September 3, 1999 at Green Acres Memorial Park, Fontana, California.

     Eleanor Haymond was born on August 4, 1783 at Monongalia County, Virginia.^2,3 She married, at age 17, Matthew Robinson, age 20 on Wednesday, December 17, 1800 at Monongalia County, Virginia, .^1,2 Eleanor Haymond died on April 17, 1864 at Waterloo Twp, Fayette County, Indiana, at age 80.^2,3 She was buried after April 17, 1864 at Robinson Chapel Cemetery, Springersville, Fayette County, Indiana.³

     Phebe D. Heacox was born on March 29, 1841 at Pennsylvania.¹ She married, at age 19, Joseph W. Robinson, age 19, son of James Robinson and Eliza Sutcliffe, on Thursday, November 15, 1860 at Clay County, Indiana, .² Phebe D. Heacox died on July 11, 1889 at Buhler, Reno County, Kansas, at age 48.¹ She was buried after July 11, 1889 at Little River Township Cemetery, Buhler, Reno County, Kansas.¹

     Catherine M. Heater was born about 1844 at Ohio.¹ She was the daughter of David Heater and Mary Magdeline Herchelroth.¹
